Off the rails, on the trail
New Zealand's Clutha River once literally ran with gold. Nuggets washed up on its beaches and, during an 1860s gold rush, it was said to be the richest gold-bearing river in the world. More than 40,000 miners crammed its banks as well as the front bars of the 42 pubs and three opium dens in the riverside town of Clyde. In the pub at Dunstan House, girls coloured like peacocks would dance on the tables.

Or perhaps the parliament of cheeses I hoover at the end of that six-course degustation?

Climb every mountain
Marty Schmidt might have been born in California but he considers himself a Kiwi, feeling more connected to the South Island and being able to climb and ski without crowds. "I visit California most years to climb and ski, but my heart and calling is in New Zealand," he says.
